U.N. to Raise India's Flag At Noonday Ceremonies

The New York Times - August 15, 1947

Marking the emergence tomorrow of India as an independent state, the United Nations will hold a brief ceremony here at which the old flag of India will be lowered and replaced by that of the new dominion.

At noon tomorrow, the newly appointed permanent representative of India to the United Nations, Dr. Padmanabha Pillai and Acting Secretary-General Ivan Kerno will proceed to the lawn in front of the main entrance to the headquarters building, where fifty-five flagpoles arranged in a circle bear the flags of all member nations.

At 12:20 o'clock, the old flag -- a blue field bearing the British Union Jack and the Great Seal with the Star of India -- will be lowered. In its place will be raised the new flag, which was being brought from Washington tonight. It has three horizontal bands, the top of saffron, the center white and the bottom dark green, with the white band bearing a dark blue wheel having twenty-four spokes, between each of which is a dark blue half-moon.
